Chapter 13 - The Name on the Ticket
The boarding pass was for a flight to Mexico City.
Passenger:
ADRIAN BENNETT.
Adrian had never booked it.
Police found a forged passport in the SUV with his photograph and a different birth date.
The scheme was changing.
If Samuel could flee under Adrian's identity, the financial trail might be redirected toward Adrian too.
Rachel ordered an immediate forensic review of every company account bearing Adrian's signature.
The results were brutal.
Several fraudulent vendor approvals carried his digital signature.
Copied from legitimate documents.
Marcus had been building an escape route for years.
If exposed, he could argue Adrian authorized the payments.
Adrian stared at the files.
"My father's company. My signature. My family."
Elena sat beside him.
"Their choices."
He looked at her.
She understood guilt now.
Too well.
Police finally located Marcus in a hospital forty miles away under a false name. He had been injured in a car crash the night Samuel disappeared.
He was alive.
And terrified.
Marcus agreed to talk in exchange for protection.
His statement changed the case again.
Samuel had not been the architect.
Marcus was.
Years earlier, Marcus began diverting small amounts through vendors. Samuel discovered the scheme and joined. Victoria learned later and helped protect them after marrying Samuel.
But the plan involving Noah?
Marcus said that came from Victoria.
Elena felt cold.
Victoria had blamed Samuel.
Marcus produced messages.
VICTORIA: Elena doesn't need to lose him permanently. She only needs to look unsafe long enough for me to take control.
SAMUEL: And if the kid gets sick?
VICTORIA: Then we use it.
No specific method.
No instruction.
Just intent.
Elena read the message twice.
Her sister had not ordered harm.
But she had made harm useful.
Then Marcus handed police one more file.
It contained a recording from the morning of the bottle.
Victoria and Samuel arguing in the kitchen pantry.
Samuel said:
"You wanted a crisis. Don't act shocked because you got one."
Victoria answered:
May you like
"I wanted Elena scared, not Noah dead."
Then came the sound of a bottle being set on glass.
