Chapter 18 - After the Verdict

The mansion never felt like home again.
Elena tried for three months.
She changed the kitchen floor.
Replaced the security system.
Removed Victoria's room entirely.
Nothing worked.
One morning she found herself staring at the exact place where the bottle had shattered.
Adrian came downstairs.
"Let's sell it."
Elena looked at him.
"You love this house."
"I love you. Houses are easier."
They sold it.
Not because they were running.
Because staying had become another way of letting the past choose for them.
They bought a smaller home outside the city with a bright kitchen and no staff wing.
Elena learned to prepare Noah's bottles without checking the locks three times.
Slowly.
Adrian cut back his travel.
Not because work caused the betrayal.
Because absence had made it easier for everyone to tell different stories to different people.
Evelyn began supervised visits months later.
She never defended Victoria again.
She also never received instant forgiveness.
Samuel and Marcus received separate sentences tied to their conduct.
Dr. Cole lost his position and faced professional discipline.
Harold spent months repairing the trust under court supervision before stepping away permanently.
Bennett Holdings installed independent compliance and outside trust oversight.
No family member could control Noah's shares alone.
Then Lily invited Elena to her first nursing-school ceremony.
Elena sat in the back row.
Afterward, Lily hugged her.
"You came."
"Of course."
Lily smiled.
"No security team?"
Elena laughed.
"They're in the parking lot. Adrian compromised."
Their friendship was different now.
Not employer and maid.
Not rescuer and guilty mother.
Two women who had survived the same morning from opposite sides.
Then Lily handed Elena a small envelope.
Inside was the original text Victoria had sent her:
Take the day off. Five thousand cash. Don't ask questions.
Elena frowned.
"Why give me this now?"
May you like
Lily said:
"Because I don't need to keep evidence of that house anymore."
