Chapter 7 - The Reversion Clause

Elena could not speak for several seconds.
Adrian looked physically ill.
Harold hurried to clarify.
"The clause was written years before anyone knew Victoria would be involved. Your father believed it was a neutral succession provision."
Neutral.
The word felt obscene now.
Elena looked at Noah sleeping in his carrier.
A baby who had no idea adults had attached eighty-six million dollars and corporate voting rights to his breathing.
"Change it," she said.
Harold answered, "You can't change an irrevocable trust overnight."
"Then freeze everything."
"I'm already petitioning the court."
Rachel requested emergency oversight and independent control of Noah's voting rights.
Adrian ordered a full internal audit of Bennett Family Holdings.
By evening, the first irregularities appeared.
Victoria had approved consulting payments totaling $3.2 million to companies nobody in finance recognized.
One company belonged to Dr. Cole's brother-in-law.
Another had no employees.
The third listed a mailbox in Delaware.
Adrian rubbed his forehead.
"How did I miss this?"
Elena answered before Rachel could.
"The same way I missed Victoria standing in my kitchen. We trusted family to look ordinary."
Lily sat nearby feeding Noah a safe, newly prepared bottle under Elena's supervision.
Elena watched every movement.
Lily noticed.
"You can breathe, ma'am."
Elena laughed once, painfully.
"I'm trying."
Then Lily said something that changed the investigation.
"Miss Victoria kept asking about Mr. Bennett's father's study."
Adrian looked up.
"What about it?"
"She asked whether I ever cleaned behind the old portrait."
Adrian frowned.
His father's study had been sealed after his death.
A portrait of Charles Bennett hung above the fireplace.
They went there together.
Behind the frame, taped to the wall, was a small brass key.
Adrian recognized the tag.
Private vault 14.
The same bank that administered Noah's trust.
Inside the vault the next morning, they found a flash drive and a letter from Charles.

The first line read:
Adrian, if Victoria is fighting for control after Noah is born, I was right to be afraid.
