Chapter 1 - THE SECOND PAGE

The first thing Rachel Bennett heard was her fifteen-month-old daughter choking on frosting.
Maddie was bent over the birthday cake.
Evelyn Bennett had one fist tangled in the toddler's hair.
Maddie's face was pressed into pink icing.
"EVELYN!"
She grabbed Evelyn's wrist, pulled Maddie free, and wiped frosting from the baby's nose and mouth.
Maddie screamed.
Her cheeks were red.
Her tiny hands shook.
"She grabbed my pearls."
"She's fifteen months old."
"Then teach her."
Something inside her snapped.
She slapped Evelyn.
The sound cracked across the room.
"That's it."
Grant's voice came from the doorway.
Her husband saw only his mother's red cheek.
He did not ask why Maddie was crying.
He did not look at the cake in her hair.
Maddie screamed louder.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then Grant said the words Evelyn had been feeding him for months.
"She is not my daughter."
Rachel tasted blood.
"Say that again."
Grant's jaw worked.
"You heard me."
Rachel reached into her coat pocket.
An envelope had been sitting there for two weeks.
Rachel tore it open.
"Fine."
She shoved the first page into his hand.
PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 99.9998%.
His face changed.
"It's mine."
"She," Rachel said coldly, "is your daughter."
Evelyn's smile disappeared.
But Rachel did not stop.
"Turn the page."
A second genetic comparison.
Madeleine Rachel Bennett.
Evelyn Marie Bennett.
Biological grandparent relationship: EXCLUDED.
Then at his mother.
"What is this?"
Evelyn said nothing.
If Maddie was his biological daughter, and Evelyn was not genetically related to Maddie, there was only one obvious explanation.
Grant's voice dropped.
"Mom?"
Evelyn backed toward the table.
Grant raised the report.
"Why does this say you can't be Maddie's grandmother?"
May you like
Evelyn's face drained white.
Then she whispered, "Because that test was never supposed to exist."
