Chapter 6 - WHAT EVELYN KNEW

Rachel learned about Celeste from Nora.
Grant had given permission to share everything.
Rachel listened without sympathy for him.
Not yet.
Maddie was eating banana slices beside her.
"Does Evelyn know we have the ledger?" Rachel asked.
"No."
"Good."
Nora slid over another document.
Evelyn had filed a petition two months earlier to become co-trustee of Maddie's future inheritance.
"She did this without telling us?"
"She claimed Grant was under stress and you were financially inexperienced."
"I manage the household foundation."
"Facts were not the point."
Attached to the petition was a psychological letter from Dr. Samuel Creed.
Not about Grant.
About Rachel.
He had never met her.
He described her as "emotionally volatile" and "potentially manipulative around issues of paternity."
"She was preparing for this."
"If a paternity fight began, Evelyn wanted herself positioned as stable family authority."
The baby smiled and offered her a piece of banana.
Rachel took it.
"What happens now?"
"We document everything."
That afternoon, a process server delivered Grant's response to the protective order.
He consented.
No contest.
He agreed to supervised visits.
Rachel did not expect that.
She expected the Grant she had known for six years.
Proud.
Defensive.
Always worried about what his mother thought.
Instead, his statement included one line.
I struck my wife while she was holding our daughter. I will not minimize it.
It did not erase anything.
But it mattered.
That evening, Grant went back to the estate.
Evelyn was waiting.
"You've been speaking to Celeste."
"How do you know?"
Her mouth tightened.
"You have her expression."
"Thirty-seven years, and that's what you say?"
"I raised you."
"You stole me."
"I saved you."
"From my mother?"
"From poverty. From scandal."
"From truth."
Evelyn's face hardened.
"Everything you have came because I made one difficult choice."
"No."
He said, "Everything I have survived came because you made thousands of choices after that one."
Then she whispered, "You have no idea what Arthur did."
"What did he do?"
May you like
"He didn't discover your kidnapping when you were five."
"He planned it with me."
