Chapter 8 - THE GUARDIANSHIP PLAN

The court expanded the protective order.

Evelyn was barred from contacting Maddie.

Rachel received temporary sole physical custody.

Grant did not object.

That surprised the judge.

It surprised Rachel more.

After the hearing, Grant waited in the courthouse hall.

Rachel came out carrying Maddie.

He stayed six feet away.

"Can I see her?"

Grant crouched.

Then buried her face in Rachel's shoulder.

He did not reach.

"I'm sorry, peanut."

Maddie peeked at him.

For years, Grant had expected forgiveness to arrive because he felt bad.

Now he finally seemed to understand that regret was not permission.

"Nora told me about the guardianship plan."

Rachel's voice was cold.

"Your mother wanted to take my child."

"Our child."

Grant corrected himself.

"Your daughter. My daughter. Not her property."

That was better.

Samuel Creed surrendered through an attorney.

He gave investigators emails from Evelyn.

One message read:

Once the Bennett lineage is questioned, Rachel becomes the unstable party. Grant will fold. The child must be inside family control before the trust audit.

Another said:

If Rachel refuses, document the house as unsafe.

"Unsafe how?"

Creed explained.

Evelyn had arranged for a private investigator to photograph unsecured medication, open balcony doors, and alcohol near Maddie's play area.

Staged evidence.

Grant went pale.

"Did anyone enter our house?"

"Twice."

"While Maddie was there?"

Rachel did not comfort him.

Nora kept reading.

There was one final email.

FROM: EVELYN BENNETT

TO: S. CREED

If Grant refuses to question paternity, use the old Bennett sample.

Creed had replied:

You mean Arthur?

"What old sample?"

"Arthur Bennett's preserved DNA."

"Why would she need my father's DNA?"

"To prove that you're Arthur's son."

Grant said, "We already know that."

"No."

The room went quiet.

"That's the part Evelyn never told you."

"Arthur wasn't your biological father either."
