Chapter 5 - UNDER THE CHAPEL

The Bennett family chapel stood on the estate behind a line of old maples.

Grant had been married there.

Maddie had been baptized there.

He hated that now.

The key opened a floor panel beneath the front pew.

Inside was a metal box.

Not his own lawyer.

Rachel's.

"I need you to witness something."

Nora was silent.

"Why me?"

"Because I don't trust anyone my mother hired."

Nora came with an investigator.

Inside the box were sealed letters, a cassette recorder, trust documents, and a ledger.

Arthur's voice filled the chapel.

"If you're hearing this, I failed to fix what I allowed."

Arthur admitted Evelyn arranged the false death record.

A doctor named Samuel Creed falsified the infant chart.

Arthur learned years later.

He did nothing.

"I told myself Grant was happy," Arthur said. "What I meant was that I was afraid."

Then came the financial secret.

The Bennett Family Voting Trust controlled forty-two percent of Bennett Group.

Arthur had amended it after learning the truth.

Voting control would pass to his biological descendants.

Grant qualified.

So did Maddie.

But Evelyn remained trustee until Grant's fortieth birthday unless a court found fraud or abuse.

Nora opened the ledger.

Large withdrawals.

Consulting fees.

Property transfers.

Payments to shell companies.

Millions.

Evelyn had been moving trust assets for years.

Grant's voice went flat.

"She knew a genetic test involving Maddie could expose that she wasn't biologically related."

"And trigger questions about the trust."

Grant thought about Evelyn's constant comments.

Maddie doesn't look like us.

Maybe you should test her.

Rachel is hiding something.

Then the investigator found a recent entry.

A payment three weeks earlier.

Recipient: Creed Medical Consulting.

"Samuel Creed is still alive?"

Nora checked.

May you like

"Retired. Florida."

And the latest payment was dated two days after Rachel ordered Maddie's DNA test.
