Chapter 14 - THE LOCKET

Victoria did not get far.
Airport police stopped her before boarding a flight to Lisbon.
The locket was around her neck.
Inside was a tiny folded strip of plastic.
BABY BOY WARD.
MOTHER: CELESTE WARD.
His first real name.
Not Bennett.
Not Hale.
Ward.
A label printed before adults rewrote him.
Victoria asked for immunity.
She had more than the bracelet.
She had letters.
Arthur's letters to Evelyn.
Evelyn's letters to Creed.
And one handwritten agreement signed before Grant's birth.
Arthur Bennett.
Evelyn Bennett.
Samuel Creed.
Victoria Ames.
They planned the substitution.
Payment amounts.
Hospital access.
A false death certificate.
The crime had never been one desperate decision after a difficult birth.
It had been scheduled.
Budgeted.
Signed.
For once, she saw why he had become a man obsessed with order.
His entire life began as organized deception.
That did not excuse what he had done to her.
But it explained part of the architecture.
Victoria told investigators Evelyn's current plan.
"If she couldn't control Maddie, she was going to destroy Grant's claim publicly."
"Why?" Nora asked.
"To force a settlement before the audit."
"And the fake kidnapping?"
"Leverage."
Rachel's hands curled into fists.
"She was going to take my child to negotiate company shares?"
"Yes."
Rachel said, "Sit."
"Sit down before you become the loudest person in the room and make this about your anger."
That surprised everyone.
Including him.
Pierce helped arrange the false court order.
He believed Evelyn would give him control.
But Evelyn had no intention of doing that.
She planned to expose Pierce's tax fraud after he helped her.
"She betrayed everyone."
"That's how she stayed powerful."
Then investigators opened another letter.
Arthur to Evelyn.
If Grant ever has a child, the lie ends. Genetic medicine will eventually make secrecy impossible.
Arthur had predicted this.
A child would expose them.
Evelyn knew it.
Rachel thought about every time Evelyn discouraged prenatal testing.
Every time she complained about pediatric genetic screening.
Every time she insisted family medical history was "private."
Then Nora received another alert.

He was headed toward the archive.
And smoke was already coming from the east wing.
