Chapter 11 - THE PARKING LOT

Rachel reached the daycare in eleven minutes.

Police reached it in nine.

Evelyn never made it out of the parking lot.

A staff member blocked her car with a delivery van.

Maddie was in the back seat crying.

Evelyn kept shouting that she was the child's grandmother.

"Mommy."

It was one of the few words Maddie could say clearly.

"You are destroying this family."

"No."

Evelyn's eyes flashed.

"I raised Grant."

"You controlled him."

"I protected him."

"You lied to him."

"Do you think he's going to become a good man because you left? He hit you because that is who he is."

Rachel's face went still.

That sentence hurt because it might be true.

He heard it.

He did not defend himself.

"She's right about one thing."

"I did that."

"And I will spend the rest of my life making sure I never become that man again."

The smile disappeared.

Police arrested Evelyn for custodial interference, forgery, and violating the protective order.

Then they searched her car.

Inside was a diaper bag.

Clothes for Maddie.

Cash.

Two passports.

One real.

One fake.

The fake passport carried Maddie's photograph and a different name.

Rachel felt cold all over.

This had not been a grandmother panicking.

It was a plan.

Detectives searched Evelyn's office.

They found plane reservations to Montreal.

A rental house in Quebec.

And an email from Pierce.

USE THE NORTH CROSSING. LESS ATTENTION.

Pierce had not simply known.

He had helped.

But another document created a bigger problem.

A DNA report.

Arthur Bennett: excluded as Grant's father.

Thomas Hale: 99.98% probability.

"Sixteen years ago."

She had known his biological father for almost half his life.

TOM WANTS CONTACT.

DO NOT ALLOW.

"Thomas wanted to meet me?"

"Repeatedly."

"Where is he now?"

May you like

"He died ten years ago."

Then Creed added, "But he left you something."
