Chapter 11 - Her Return

The winter ball was not announced as Isabella’s return.
She refused the phrase.
“I never disappeared.”
She entered in emerald green.
The gown followed her body instead of fighting it.
No tight waist.
No hidden reinforcement.
No old measurements.
The room became quiet anyway.
Adrian stood.
Isabella crossed the ballroom alone.
Then she began to dance.
By herself.
Slowly.
Not for the court.
Not for him.
For the simple pleasure of movement that no longer had to prove beauty.
Her turns were smaller than before childbirth.
Her breathing became heavier sooner.
Halfway through, she stopped.
The room held its breath.
Isabella laughed.
“I need water.”
A few people laughed with her.
Not at her.
She drank.
Sat down.
No shame.
After a moment she looked at Adrian.
“Now.”
He stepped down from the throne.
That mattered.
He met her on the same floor.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
They danced.
He watched her face.
Once he whispered:
“Need to stop?”
“Not yet.”
At the edge of the room, the throne sat empty.
When the music ended, Isabella did not bow to the court.
She bowed dramatically to Julian, who clapped from Miriam’s arms.
Later Mara brought a letter from Helena.
One sentence:
YOU HAVE MADE WEAKNESS FASHIONABLE.
Isabella laughed so hard her stomach hurt.
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
She handed it to him.
His face darkened.
“No.”
She took the letter back.
“Don’t ruin this.”
“What are you going to do?”
Isabella folded it.
“Nothing.”
Then tossed it into the fire.
Helena still believed softness was weakness.
Isabella finally understood how exhausting that belief must be.
The next morning, Dr. Vale brought good news.
Her surgical repair was healing correctly.
But he added:
“Your body may never return to its old shape.”
Isabella smiled.
“Good.”
He looked surprised.
May you like
She continued:
“I’m tired of everyone acting like the old shape is waiting for me somewhere.”
