Chapter 12 - The Palace Learns

Isabella changed the royal household slowly.

No public weigh-ins for women.

No ceremonial fittings that ignored medical restrictions.

No physician reporting through political offices.

Miriam became head of maternal care.

Mara oversaw Isabella’s private household.

Dr. Vale answered to patients first.

The reforms seemed boring.

That was their strength.

Real safety rarely looked dramatic.

Adrian changed too.

Not elegantly.

He still made mistakes.

At dinner, Julian refused peas.

Adrian said:

“Your mother ate hers.”

Isabella looked at him.

He froze.

Then corrected himself.

“Actually, that has nothing to do with your peas.”

Julian laughed.

So did Isabella.

Later Adrian asked:

“Was that better?”

“No.”

He looked disappointed.

She smiled.

“But it was different.”

That mattered.

The four women who had laughed at the gold-dress ball apologized.

Isabella did not humiliate them back.

She removed them from her household.

Consequences without theater.

Celeste sent a long letter.

Isabella read it once.

Then stored it.

Forgiveness was not a royal duty.

One year after the ball, a painter unveiled Isabella’s new portrait.

She wore no crown.

No corset.

Julian stood beside her holding one finger.

Her body was painted as it was.

Adrian studied it.

“You like it?”

“Yes.”

“Do I?”

“You’re not in it.”

He laughed.

“Exactly.”

Their marriage remained complicated.

Some nights Isabella could not bear his touch.

He learned not to act wounded.

Other nights she reached for him.

He learned not to treat that as proof everything was repaired.

Trust returned like strength after surgery.

Unevenly.

Then a servant arrived with the last box removed from Helena’s old office.

Inside was the gold gown.

Cleaned.

Repaired.

Preserved.

Adrian went pale.

Isabella touched the fabric.

Something crackled inside the hem.

A note.

Helena’s handwriting.

MAKE HER REMEMBER WHO SHE USED TO BE.

Isabella stared at it.

Then smiled.

May you like

Helena still believed memory could be used as a cage.

Isabella had another idea.
