Chapter 20 - Stop

The word that changed Isabella’s life was not “queen.”

Not “beautiful.”

Not “mother.”

It was:

“Stop.”

She had shouted it in a ballroom while wearing a dress designed to make her ashamed.

Years later, she taught Julian the same word.

“If someone hurts you?”

“Stop.”

“If someone says you must hide pain to look strong?”

“Stop.”

“If I tell you to eat peas?”

Julian grinned.

“Stop.”

Adrian groaned.

“You have created a monster.”

Isabella laughed.

“No. A prince with boundaries.”

On the anniversary of the medical wing, Isabella wore gold again.

Not the old gown.

A new one.

Soft.

Loose.

Beautiful because she liked it.

At dinner, Adrian whispered:

“May I say something dangerous?”

“That depends.”

“You look beautiful.”

She smiled.

“That is allowed.”

“Good.”

Then he added:

“But you looked beautiful before.”

Her smile disappeared.

Adrian immediately winced.

“Wrong?”

“Very.”

“Why?”

“Because the lesson was never that I was secretly beautiful while everyone was cruel.”

He listened.

“The lesson is that I deserved respect even if I wasn’t beautiful at all.”

Adrian nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“Now you may compliment the dress.”

“I love the dress.”

“Excellent recovery.”

They laughed.

Music began.

Isabella stood.

Adrian did not order her to dance.

He did not even ask.

She crossed the floor by choice.

Julian joined her.

Then Mara.

Then Miriam.

Finally Isabella looked at Adrian and held out her hand.

Only then did the king rise.

Years earlier, he had sat above her on a throne and laughed while she struggled to breathe.

Now he stepped down.

No command.

No audience that mattered.

No old dress deciding who she should be.

Behind glass in another wing of the palace, that gown hung empty.

Isabella began to dance.

And when she stopped, the music stopped with her.
