Chapter 13 - The Gold Dress

The gold gown disappeared from storage.
Court gossip began immediately.
Was Isabella going to burn it?
Wear it again?
Send it to Helena?
None of those.
She gave it to the new maternal medical wing.
The dress was placed behind glass.
Not as fashion.
As evidence of an idea.
The plaque read:
THIS GOWN WAS ONCE USED TO MEASURE A WOMAN AGAINST THE BODY SHE HAD BEFORE CHILDBIRTH.
IT FAILED.
Mara cried.
Dr. Vale pretended not to.
Adrian stood beside Isabella.
“No names?”
“No.”
“No description of what happened?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because the point is bigger than us.”
The medical wing served women from across the kingdom.
Difficult births.
Long recoveries.
Conditions people once hid because court culture treated suffering as embarrassment.
Isabella walked through the rooms on opening day.
Some mornings her scar still hurt.
Her abdomen remained softer and fuller.
She had stopped asking when recovery would return her to the woman she used to be.
Recovery was not a return.
That evening Adrian raised a glass.
Isabella expected a speech about her courage.
Instead:
“To Dr. Vale, Miriam, Mara, and everyone who told the truth when it was inconvenient.”
She smiled.
Better.
Julian pulled her toward the musicians.
“Dance!”
She laughed.
“Again?”
He nodded violently.
So Isabella danced with her son.
Badly.
Joyfully.
He stepped on her foot.
She nearly tripped.
The room laughed.
This time she laughed hardest.
Adrian watched from the side.
He did not assume he was invited.
After a minute, Isabella held out her hand.
“Come on.”
Only then did he join them.
Behind glass, the gold dress hung empty.
For years Isabella had believed it represented the woman she lost.

Now she understood.
It represented a cage that no longer fit.
