Chapter 15 - The Prince

Julian turned three in spring.

At his birthday banquet, he climbed under the table and refused to come out.

The court panicked.

Isabella crawled under after him.

A queen on her knees beneath linen and silverware.

Julian whispered:

“Too loud.”

She understood.

“Want to leave?”

He nodded.

So they left.

No speech.

No apology to guests.

Later Helena’s old allies complained the prince needed stronger discipline.

Isabella ignored them.

Adrian did not.

He reminded the council:

“He is three.”

The words mattered.

Prince before child had been the old rule.

Now child came first.

That night Julian touched Isabella’s scar where it showed above her nightgown.

“Hurts?”

“Sometimes.”

“Because me?”

Her heart stopped.

“No.”

He looked worried.

Isabella crouched.

“Listen to me. You did not hurt me.”

“But I came out.”

She smiled through tears.

“My body worked very hard to bring you here. Then it needed help healing.”

Julian thought.

“Doctor help?”

“Yes.”

“Mama brave?”

Isabella kissed his forehead.

“Sometimes.”

Adrian watched from the doorway.

Later he whispered:

“My mother would have told him never to ask.”

“I know.”

“I would have too.”

“I know.”

The palace had changed because people were finally allowed to name what hurt.

A year earlier, pain was hidden beneath gold silk.

Now a little boy could ask about a scar.

Then Mara entered holding a sealed document.

The final council ruling.

Helena’s faction had appealed the rewritten regency law.

The high court rejected the appeal.

The new protections were permanent.

Isabella read the decision.

Adrian smiled.

“Finished?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

His smile disappeared.

She folded the paper.

“Better.”

She had learned to distrust endings that claimed everything was fixed.

Life was not fixed.

It was tended.

That evening, she went to the medical wing.

The gold dress stood behind glass.

A young mother was reading the plaque while holding a baby.

She did not know Isabella was behind her.

The woman whispered:

May you like

“Thank God.”

Isabella quietly walked away.
