Chapter 10 - THE LAWYER'S PHONE

Nathan claimed he sensed trouble. Detective Kim and Dante did not believe him.

"Why were you filming?" Rachel asked.

Nathan kept his professional calm. "I was documenting a private family matter."

"For whom?"

"My client."

Grant stared at him. "I never asked you to."

Nathan's expression barely shifted.

At Rebecca's modest townhome, Lily laughed while building a tower from cereal boxes. The absence of marble and servants felt like relief.

Rebecca watched Dante watching her.

"She used to laugh like that all the time."

"Before Vivian?"

"Before Amelia died."

Dante sat at the table.

"How did Amelia die?"

"Car accident."

She brought out another folder.

Inside was Amelia's accident report.

The brakes had failed on a mountain road.

Mechanical defect, the report said.

But clipped behind it was an email Amelia sent Rebecca two days before the crash.

Grant thinks I'm paranoid, but someone accessed Lily's trust documents through his family office. If anything happens to me, do not let Grant's lawyers control the narrative.

"Who had access?"

Rebecca pointed to a list.

Grant.

Nathan Cole.

And Grant's late father.

At the bottom, added by hand months later, was another name.

Vivian Mercer.

Dante looked up.

"She wasn't married to Grant then."

May you like

"No."

"She was Amelia's financial adviser."
