Chapter 17 - WHAT GRANT KNEW

Nathan said Grant knew Amelia was investigating unauthorized transfers.

He said Grant knew Amelia distrusted Vivian.

Then he implied Grant knowingly allowed Nathan to "handle" Amelia's concerns in exchange for keeping conflict away from him.

The prosecutor leaned forward.

"Did Grant know anyone intended to damage Amelia's vehicle?"

"Not that I can prove."

He had received Amelia's email about Vivian asking trust questions.

He had answered:

Please stop spiraling. Nathan will handle it.

He had received another message from Amelia the morning of her death.

Something is wrong with the Rover. I'm taking it in Monday.

Grant replied with a thumbs-up emoji.

When Rebecca saw the messages, she slapped him.

"You dismissed her until she was dead," Rebecca said.

"Yes."

"And then you dismissed Lily until she was on her knees."

"Yes."

"Stop saying yes like confession is courage."

Grant's eyes filled.

"What do you want me to say?"

Rebecca's voice shook. "I want my sister back."

The grand jury ultimately declined to charge Grant in Amelia's death. There was no evidence he knew about the sabotage.

But prosecutors referred his conduct toward Lily to family court, where the standard was different and the consequences more personal.

He entered parenting therapy, resigned from the foundation board, and put his voting shares under independent management.

Then Lily's therapist gave him a task.

"Write her a letter she can read when she's older."

"About what?"

"About the night you failed her."

Lily, the worst thing I did was not that I failed to see. It was that I saw enough and chose comfort anyway.

Because outside his apartment, someone had just slid an envelope under the door.

Inside was a photograph of Lily.
