Chapter 9 - THE FIRST PAYMENT

Nathan Cole asked to speak privately.

Detective Kim refused.

"Not if the conversation involves evidence."

Grant looked at Nathan. "Did I pay him?"

Nathan chose every word carefully.

"Your family office paid an initial consultation invoice."

"For what?"

"Vivian described concerns about Lily's behavior."

Grant's face twisted. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"I sent the invoice to your assistant. You approved the monthly family-office batch."

Grant laughed once, bitterly.

"So I paid a doctor to build a case against my own child because I couldn't be bothered to read a spreadsheet."

Grant had delegated everything uncomfortable, including his daughter.

Rebecca left with Lily just after eight. Dante walked them to the car.

Lily held his index finger until she had to climb into the back seat.

"Are you coming?" she asked.

"Not today."

Dante crouched. "But I'm not disappearing."

"Promise?"

He thought of Amelia's letter.

"Promise."

After they drove away, Ellen handed him coffee.

"You know this is about to become national news."

"I know."

"And you hit a woman on camera."

Dante grimaced. "I defended myself badly."

"That's going to be the headline."

"Then let it be."

Ellen studied him. "You really mean that?"

"A three-year-old was kneeling on marble while a room full of rich adults protected their comfort. I am not making myself the victim of that night."

By noon, every major outlet had footage from the party.

The clip of Vivian pouring water went viral first.

Then Lily's cry.

Then Dante stepping between them.

But at 1:16 p.m., a different video appeared online.

It had not come from a guest.

It came from an anonymous account.

The clip showed Dante's strike from a second angle.

And in the background, barely visible in a mirror, was someone holding a phone before the confrontation even began.

Someone who knew trouble was coming.

"Who's that?"

Ellen zoomed in on the mirror. The man holding the phone was Nathan Cole.
