Chapter 16 - NO EASY HEROES

The public turned Dante into a hero. He hated it. When a magazine cover read HE SAVED LILY, he threw it away.

"I didn't save her. Maria spoke up. Rebecca came. Rachel investigated. A judge signed orders. A therapist is doing the work."

"You stepped in first."

"After sixty people didn't."

"Because you know one dramatic moment is easier to celebrate than months of boring responsibility."

The foundation board asked Dante to help rebuild its literacy program. He agreed on one condition.

"No celebrity branding. Put child-safety reporting in every funded program. Training. Independent oversight. Mandatory escalation."

The board agreed.

Meanwhile, prosecutors built their case against Vivian and Nathan.

He admitted he had helped structure fraudulent trust documents and paid Rusk through Blue Ridge.

But he insisted Vivian designed the plan.

Then he gave prosecutors something nobody expected.

A recording.

Vivian's voice.

Recorded six weeks before Amelia died.

"If Amelia is gone, Grant becomes manageable. If Grant becomes manageable, Lily becomes paperwork."

He listened to the woman he later married reduce his wife and daughter to obstacles.

When the recording ended, he whispered, "I brought her into Lily's bedroom."

Then Nathan's attorney added one final condition to his cooperation deal.

"My client will testify to everything," he said, "including what Grant knew before Amelia died."

Grant slowly lifted his head.
