Chapter 20 - HOME

The court did not return custody. It expanded Grant's visits but kept them supervised for six more months.

"My daughter gets to feel safe before I get to feel forgiven," he said.

A year passed. The mansion was sold, the linen room renovated away, and Lily barely remembered it.

On her fifth birthday, Rebecca held a small party in her backyard.

Paper lanterns hung from a maple tree. Maria brought cupcakes, Detective Kim a book, and Ellen wisely kept her camera in her bag.

"Dante!"

He lifted her carefully. "You're getting heavy."

"I'm five."

"That explains everything."

He carried a wooden train set.

Lily looked at it, then at him.

"You remembered."

Grant smiled. "You told me twelve times."

"Thirteen."

"My mistake."

Grant still put one curved piece in the wrong place.

Later, as the sun went down, Dante sat beside Rebecca on the porch.

"Think he'll ever get full custody again?" he asked.

Rebecca watched Grant help Lily push the wooden train across the grass.

"Maybe. Maybe not."

"You okay with that?"

"I stopped needing the ending to look traditional. I just need it to be safe."

"You okay?"

"That's new," he said.

"Yeah."

On the porch table sat a framed copy of one line from Amelia's final letter.

Love is noticing when the person you love gets quiet.

A year earlier, adults had watched Lily scrub marble because speaking up felt inconvenient. Now they heard her laughter - and noticed her silence too.

Dante looked across the yard and understood the real difference. Nobody there was waiting for a hero anymore. They were simply paying attention.

Lily sent the wooden train racing down the track and shouted, "Again!"

This time, the word meant joy.
