Chapter 19 - THE WALL SAFE

Vivian claimed Amelia had hidden a duplicate trust archive behind the library wall.

Detective Kim obtained a warrant anyway.

Behind a framed landscape in the mansion library was a narrow steel safe Grant had never seen.

Inside were old passports, jewelry, handwritten notes, and a sealed box marked FOR LILY WHEN SHE IS OLD ENOUGH.

There was also one final letter from Amelia.

Rebecca read it aloud.

My sweet Lily,

If you're reading this as an adult, I hope all my fear turned out to be unnecessary. I hope your father learned that love is not paying for a beautiful house. Love is noticing when the person you love gets quiet.

Rebecca continued.

I do not want you to inherit my fear. I want you to inherit my money only after you understand it cannot buy the one thing I hope you always demand from people: kindness without an audience.

There was a second page addressed to Grant.

If I am gone, do not replace me by finding someone who makes your life easier. Find people who make you more honest.

The safe also contained the original trust instrument.

Its final clause clarified something none of the lawyers had noticed in the scanned copies.

If Grant lost custody because of neglect, he could never control Lily's trust again, even if custody was later restored.

The money would remain under independent trusteeship until Lily turned twenty-five.

"Good."

"That's all you have to say?"

"If losing the money is what proves I'm not here for the money, then good."

Vivian ultimately pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud, child endangerment, and a homicide-related charge negotiated around Nathan's testimony and Rusk's cooperation. Nathan pleaded guilty too.

And months later, the judge scheduled the hearing that would decide whether Grant would ever again have unsupervised time with Lily.

When the judge asked her therapist what the child wanted, the therapist opened her notes.

"She said she wants her dad to come home."

Then the therapist finished the sentence.

"But she says home is Aunt Rebecca's house."
