Chapter 11 - What His Password Approved

The auditor placed two versions of the same approval on Brandon's screen. The first authorized maintenance contracts. The second, delivered to the bank, requested a multimillion-dollar transfer.
"Your login approved both," the auditor said. "That's evidence you need to explain, not proof you intended both."
Brandon remembered signing from an airport lounge. Nicole had asked him to hurry before his flight. He had used the link she sent and never opened the attachment saved in the final packet.
Sebastian listened without interrupting. Then he said, "You made it easy for somebody to use your name."
"I know."
"People could lose their jobs because you didn't look."
"I know that too."
Nina didn't enjoy watching Brandon squirm. She wanted him to understand the cost of carelessness, but she also needed him to stop pretending the foundation was a family dinner where mistakes could be smoothed over.
Priya told the bank and title company that authorization was disputed. She advised the trustees to preserve emails and devices, not to delete or amend anything. The independent auditor began tracing where the transfer went.
Brandon offered Nina a private apology.
"You assumed I was stealing," she said.
"I did. You were wearing a uniform, and Nicole had already told me a story about you. I believed the easiest version."
"Don't tell me you've learned something. Do something with it."
He nodded. "I'll testify to what I actually approved. Even if it costs me my position."
Before Nina could answer, Luis called. A message was circulating among Harbor House volunteers, claiming she'd taken money to fake the accounting scandal.
