Chapter 8 - A Father's Name on the Wrong Paper

Sebastian studied the affidavit in the kitchen of his Beacon Hill home. He wore an old sweater and held the pages so close to his face that Brandon offered him his glasses. Sebastian waved him away.

"I didn't sign this," he said.

Brandon rubbed his forehead. "It's the same signature on our annual reports."

"Someone copied it. Your mother wouldn't let this building go to a developer, and neither will I."

The small kitchen was cluttered with photographs. In one, Evelyn read to children on the Harbor House steps.

"Why wasn't anyone checking the account?" Nina asked.

Sebastian looked ashamed. "I trusted my son. He trusted his wife. We called that oversight. It wasn't."

Brandon started to defend himself, then stopped. "I signed a general authorization for vendors last spring. Nicole handled the paperwork."

"General authorization isn't permission to invent a trustee meeting," Priya said, joining by video. "But we must review what the bank and title company actually received."

Sebastian called the foundation's board chair and requested an emergency independent audit. Brandon agreed to give the auditor access to his work email, including approvals he might regret.

Nina thought of the children outside the locked center. "That buys us time. It doesn't reopen the doors."

"You're right," Sebastian said. "I want to fund emergency programs separately, without touching the disputed trust."

Brandon looked at his father. "You could have done that months ago."

"I could have asked questions months ago. So could you."

As Nina prepared to leave, her phone rang. A woman said, "It's Mara Benton. I heard Nicole accused you of stealing. I was your supervisor, and I have the report you filed."

"Where are you?" Nina asked.

"At home. But someone just left a copy of my resignation letter on my doorstep. It has a message written across it."

Mara read the message slowly.

SHE DIDN'T LISTEN THE FIRST TIME. MAKE SURE NINA DOES.
