Chapter 12 - The Lie That Traveled Faster

By noon, Nina's phone had filled with insults. People she had never met called her a thief. Her catering supervisor put her next two shifts on hold, saying the company needed to review the complaint.
"You stopped her hand," Luis said. "There's a video. Why are they blaming you?"
"Because a lie can fit in one screenshot," Nina answered. "The truth needs the pages around it."
She gave the supervisor Celeste's incident report and the photographer's footage through her attorney. She didn't publish the records. She wanted the missing money found, not applause from strangers.
At Harbor House, Alma showed her a wall of paper messages from families who used the center. Some thanked Nina for asking questions; some were angry about the closure. One father had written, Please don't make us move again.
Nina stared at that line a long time.
That afternoon Leah Pike called. "I know who sent the consulting agreement," she said. "It wasn't you."
"Will you tell Priya?"
"Only if she can help me keep my job records. Nicole says she'll accuse me of taking files if I speak."
Priya arranged for Leah to give a statement with counsel present. Leah brought a calendar invitation showing Nicole had booked room 614, a message directing her to leave the folio by the head table, and a draft public statement blaming Nina for missing funds.
"Why help me now?" Nina asked.
Leah looked miserable. "Because she said you were dangerous. Then I watched her hit you. I can't pretend I didn't."

She reached into her bag and placed a phone on the table.
"And I have the message Nicole received just before the alarm."
