Chapter 18 - The Records That Stayed

Investigators traced the threatening messages and the man photographing Nina to a contractor hired by Adrian. His statement connected the intimidation to the missing funds. Interviews cleared several employees and showed the supposed relocation studies were mostly invoices without completed work.

Adrian's company returned a portion of the disputed funds under a court-supervised agreement. The remaining transfers were contested. The criminal investigation continued, separate from the foundation's civil claims.

Brandon gave a statement about approving documents without reading the final attachments. He stepped down from his executive role. Sebastian stopped describing the failure as something one dishonest person had done to a good family.

"We built a system that rewarded people for not asking," he told Nina. "Nicole exploited it. We let the doors stay open."

Nina wasn't ready to comfort him. "Then don't build another one like it."

One afternoon, Priya showed her a final hotel record. The room 614 booking, the false consulting agreement and the staffing request all led back to Nicole's office. Nina had been placed in front of a crowd so she could be blamed when the documents were found.

"Why hit me?" Nina asked.

"We can't know every reason," Priya said. "But after you exposed the altered program, she needed the room to see you as the problem."

That evening Alma called from Harbor House. The trustees had released temporary operating money from an uncontested reserve while the larger accounts remained under review. The center could reopen its evening classes.

Nina called Luis. He answered from a room full of folding chairs.

"We've got the lights on," he said. "I just need somebody to help set up."

"I'm coming."
