Chapter 13 - The Message Beside the Folio

Leah's phone displayed a copy of the task messages she'd been required to archive. The warning sent to Nicole during the ballroom confrontation came from Adrian Vale.
THE OLD FOLIO IS STILL DOWNSTAIRS. THE RUNNER MISSED THE PICKUP. GET IT BEFORE THE TRUSTEES SEE IT.
"That's why she kept looking at her phone," Nina said.
Leah nodded. "I thought we were correcting a seating mistake. Nicole told me the old paperwork had personal information in it."
"And the alarm?" Priya asked.
"I don't know who pulled it. I was already in the elevator."
The distinction mattered. Nina wouldn't invent an answer just because she suspected Adrian. The hotel had its own investigation under way, and the fire-alarm record had been preserved.
Leah identified the folio as part of Nicole's plan to move the disputed transfer documents through a service exit. When Nina recognized the financial changes, Nicole switched to claiming Nina had brought the folio herself.
"She asked for Nina to be assigned near the head table," Leah admitted. "She said if anything went wrong, people would believe the guest before the server."
Nina looked down at her hands. Those hands had carried dishes through that room. They had also stopped a slap without returning one.
"You can tell a room whatever you want about somebody," she said. "You can't make it true by putting them in an apron."
Priya thanked Leah and gave the records to the independent auditor and the appropriate investigators. She told Leah to save the originals and not contact Nicole directly.
When Leah left, Brandon came in with a fresh discovery. A transfer from the foundation had reached North Quay, but the money hadn't stayed there. Most had been wired to an escrow account connected with the Harbor House buyer.

"She was using the trust's money to finance the trust's own sale," he said.
Priya set down her pen. "Then we need a court to stop the closing before that money moves again."
