Chapter 11 - Dad Finally Speaks

Diane stared at Thomas.

“You had no right to touch that.”

He laughed bitterly.

“My account number is written on it.”

He held up the page.

Next to the number were three transfers totaling forty-two thousand dollars.

I watched my father change in real time.

For decades, Thomas had treated conflict like bad weather. He waited for it to pass, even when other people were standing outside in the rain.

Now the storm had reached him.

“What did you do?” he asked.

Diane crossed her arms. “I managed our money.”

“You managed our household account. That is a corporate reserve account.”

“You said I could move funds when needed.”

“For payroll emergencies.”

Vanessa looked up. “Mom told me Dad approved the honeymoon transfer.”

Thomas turned to her. “What honeymoon transfer?”

The room went silent again.

Vanessa looked sick.

“Twenty thousand.”

Ryan’s head snapped toward her. “You told me your dad gave us that.”

“I thought he did.”

Thomas shook his head.

“I gave you five.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Diane said, “This is absurd. Every family moves money around.”

“No,” Jonah replied. “They don’t.”

Thomas walked toward his wife.

“Did you take money from my company?”

Diane lowered her voice. “We can discuss this privately.”

“You made Clara’s place in this family a public discussion for twenty years.”

My breath caught.

Diane’s eyes narrowed.

Thomas kept going.

“You told Vanessa Clara was the reason our family was complicated. You told me keeping the peace meant letting you say whatever you wanted. I let you do it.”

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I had imagined those words a thousand times.

They did not heal anything.

But they landed.

Diane’s face twisted. “So now you’re choosing her too?”

Thomas looked exhausted.

“I should have chosen the truth years ago.”

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“Stop.”

Everyone looked at her.

She wiped her face with the back of her hand.

“Stop acting like this is all Mom.”

Ryan stared at her.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I moved Clara’s chair.”

Her voice shook.

“I sent the fake text.”

May you like

My stomach dropped.

“And I knew the first transfer wasn’t authorized.”
