Chapter 18 - The Ring

The small gold band made almost no sound when Ryan placed it on the table.
Vanessa stared at it.
“Ryan.”
“I can’t pretend tonight didn’t happen.”
Her face crumpled. “Please don’t do this here.”
“I’m not making a legal announcement. I’m telling you I need space.”
She reached for his hand.
He stepped back.
“I love you,” she whispered.
“I believe you think you do.”
That hurt even me.
Ryan’s voice stayed quiet.
“But love can’t survive if every uncomfortable truth becomes somebody else’s fault.”
Vanessa looked at me.
I could see the instinct rise in her—to blame me again, to say my name, to make me the reason.
She stopped herself.
That was the first real change I saw in her all night.
Ryan walked away with his brother.
The reception ended in pieces.
Guests collected coats. Staff boxed untouched cake. The band packed cables while pretending not to listen.
Dad sat alone at a table, making calls to banks and business partners.
Jonah took photographs of every document before sealing them in an envelope.
Police officers arrived just after midnight to take preliminary statements.
Diane did not answer her phone.
At 12:40 a.m., Grandma and I sat in the hotel lobby with two paper cups of bad coffee.
“You okay?” she asked.
I laughed softly. “No.”
“Good answer.”
I rested my head against the chair.
“I hate that part of me feels relieved.”
“Relief isn’t cruelty.”
“I hate that Vanessa’s wedding blew up.”
Grandma looked at me.
“You can feel sorry for someone and still refuse to carry what they did.”
I stared into my coffee.
“Do you really want me as trustee?”
“Yes.”
“After tonight, I’m not sure I want anything to do with family money.”
Grandma smiled.
“That is exactly why I trust you with it.”
Before I could answer, Dad walked across the lobby.
His face was gray.
“The bank froze the accounts,” he said.
“Good,” Grandma replied.
Dad shook his head.
“That’s not all.”
He held up his phone.
“Diane used the company card at a gas station forty miles north.”
Grandma frowned.
I knew the highway.
So did Dad.

We said the same thing at once.
“The lake house.”
