Chapter 15 - The Signature Dad Didn't Give

Dad took the document.

His face went blank.

“I never signed this.”

Diane closed her eyes.

Vanessa stared at her mother.

“Mom?”

The paper claimed Thomas, as president of Bennett Development, acknowledged that the lake house sale was part of a broader family asset restructuring.

It was nonsense dressed in legal language.

But it had one purpose: make a suspicious transaction look normal to anyone who asked questions.

Dad’s forged signature sat at the bottom.

He looked at Diane.

“How many?”

She said nothing.

“How many times have you signed my name?”

“Thomas—”

“How many?”

Her shoulders dropped.

“I don’t know.”

That answer destroyed whatever remained of his denial.

He sat down and stared at the floor.

Vanessa’s voice came out small.

“You told me Dad signed it.”

Diane looked at her daughter.

“I did what I had to do.”

“For what?”

“For this family.”

I could not stay quiet.

“No. You did it for control.”

Diane turned toward me.

“You have no idea what I gave up.”

I stepped closer.

“You’re right. I don’t. I only know what I gave up because adults kept telling me your comfort mattered more than my truth.”

Dad looked at me.

I kept going.

“I stopped bringing pictures of Mom to your house because Diane said they made Vanessa insecure. I stopped calling Grandma from the kitchen because it made Diane think we were talking about her. I let Vanessa believe my mother ruined your marriage because you asked me to protect her.”

My throat tightened, but I didn’t stop.

“I was seven when you left. Everyone kept asking me to be mature about it.”

Dad’s eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

This time the words felt different.

Not forgiveness.

A boundary.

Jonah cleared his throat.

“We need to secure these documents and notify the bank tomorrow.”

Grandma nodded.

Ryan looked at Vanessa.

“What happens to us?” she whispered.

He stared at his wedding ring.

“I don’t know.”

Her face broke.

Then a hotel employee rushed into the office.

“Mr. Cole? Mrs. Cole?”

Ryan turned.

The employee looked alarmed.

“The bride’s mother just left through the service exit.”

We all looked toward the empty space by the wall.

Diane was gone.
