Chapter 19 - The Lake House

We did not chase her.
That was Jonah’s first instruction.
“Call the sheriff. Let law enforcement handle it.”
For once, Dad listened.
By two in the morning, deputies were waiting near the lake property.
Diane arrived twenty minutes later.
She was carrying a file box.
According to the deputy who called Dad, she tried to say she was collecting personal papers before “Clara took everything.”
Inside the box were bank statements, blank signature pages, copies of Grandma’s identification, and old business records from Dad’s office.
There was also an envelope labeled LENA.
My mother’s name.
When Dad told me, I stopped breathing for a second.
“What was in it?”
“He hasn’t opened it.”
The envelope arrived at Jonah’s office the next afternoon with the other seized materials.
I almost left it sealed.
Then I saw my mother’s handwriting.
Clara - when you’re old enough.
My hands shook.
Inside was a four-page letter dated six months after Dad left us.
Mom had written about the divorce, about her anger, and about one thing she wanted me to understand.
Your father made choices that hurt us, but you are not the consequence of a mistake. You were loved before the marriage failed, during the worst of it, and after. Never let anyone make you audition for a place that is already yours.
I cried so hard I had to stop reading.
Dad sat across from me.
“I never saw that letter.”
Jonah checked the envelope.
“There’s a note on the back.”
Dad read it.
Given to Thomas Bennett for Clara on her eighteenth birthday.
My head lifted.
“You had it?”
Dad went white.
“No.”
Then he remembered.
“Diane handled the mail after we moved offices.”
I closed my eyes.
She had kept my mother’s words from me for more than a decade.
Not for money.
For control.
That hurt in a way the stolen funds never could.
Three days later, Diane turned herself in with an attorney. The financial investigation continued, and the family stopped pretending it could be solved with a private apology.
Vanessa moved out of the home she shared with Ryan.
She texted me once.
I found Mom’s copy of the letter. I think she knew what it said.
I did not answer immediately.

Then another message appeared.
I’m not asking you to forgive me. But when you’re ready, there’s something else I need to give back to you.
