Chapter 12 - The Bride's Confession

Ryan stepped backward as if Vanessa had struck him.

“You knew?”

Vanessa nodded once.

Diane whispered, “Don’t.”

Vanessa ignored her.

“I didn’t know all of it. Not at first.”

“Then tell me what you did know,” Ryan said.

She looked at him, and whatever she saw in his face made her start shaking.

“Mom said Grandma had promised to pay for the wedding but changed her mind because Clara was in her ear.”

Grandma said, “I offered ten thousand dollars.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I know that now.”

“When did you know?” Ryan asked.

“Two weeks ago.”

The answer hit harder than I expected.

Two weeks.

Enough time to stop.

Enough time to tell someone.

Enough time to decide who she wanted to be.

Ryan’s voice was almost a whisper. “And the fake text?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“I used an online service. It can make a message look like it came from another number.”

Aunt Rachel muttered something under her breath.

I asked, “Why?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because if Grandma blamed you, she’d stop listening to you.”

There it was.

Not jealousy.

Strategy.

I felt cold from my scalp to my hands.

“You tried to make an old woman believe I wanted to steal from her.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled again. “I was scared.”

“Of what?”

She looked toward the black folder.

“That Grandma was changing the trust.”

Grandma’s expression sharpened.

“How did you know about that?”

Vanessa went silent.

Jonah closed the notebook.

“Margaret’s trust amendment was confidential.”

Diane moved toward her daughter. “You don’t have to answer.”

Grandma stood.

“Yes, she does.”

Vanessa looked at Diane.

Then at me.

Finally she whispered, “Mom found a draft in Dad’s office.”

Thomas frowned. “My office?”

Diane’s face changed.

Vanessa nodded.

“She said Grandma was cutting us out and giving Clara control of everything.”

Grandma laughed sadly.

“I wasn’t cutting anyone out.”

She looked at me.

“I was removing Diane as successor trustee.”

Everyone turned toward Diane.

May you like

Grandma continued.

“And I was appointing Clara in her place.”
