Chapter 16 - The Service Exit

Dad ran first.

I had never seen him move that fast.

We followed him down the corridor, through the kitchen, and out a metal service door into the hotel loading area.

Diane’s car was gone.

Vanessa stood barefoot on the pavement, holding her dress above the wet ground.

“She left me.”

Nobody answered.

Ryan took off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders.

It was a kind gesture.

Not a romantic one.

Vanessa understood the difference.

Dad called Diane three times.

No answer.

Jonah came outside holding the black folder.

“We should assume she may try to access accounts or destroy records.”

Dad nodded. “I’ll call the bank.”

Grandma said, “And the police.”

Vanessa flinched.

“Grandma.”

Margaret looked at her.

“Your mother forged my signature and your father’s signature. She took money from my account.”

“She’s still my mom.”

“And you are still responsible for what you did.”

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward me.

For a moment, I thought she might apologize.

Instead she said, “You got what you wanted.”

The words stunned me.

Ryan closed his eyes.

Grandma whispered, “Vanessa, no.”

But I raised a hand.

“No. Let her finish.”

Vanessa was crying again.

“Everybody stood up for you. Grandma picked you. Dad picked you. Ryan believes you. Mom is gone. The wedding is destroyed.”

I stared at her.

“You think I wanted this?”

“You always wanted people to see who she was.”

“Yes,” I said. “I wanted people to see the truth. That is not the same as wanting your life ruined.”

She looked away.

I stepped closer.

“You removed my chair because you thought making me small would keep your world standing.”

Her face tightened.

“But I didn’t knock it down, Vanessa. You built it on lies.”

For once, she had nothing to say.

Ryan looked toward the hotel.

“Come inside. We need to tell the guests the reception is over.”

Vanessa went pale.

“No.”

“Vanessa.”

“No. I will not walk back in there so everyone can stare at me.”

Then Grandma said something I never expected.

“You made Clara walk through that room alone.”

May you like

She opened the service door.

“Now you’re going to walk back through it with the truth.”
