Chapter 11 - The Original Ledger

Owen took my phone and wire.

My father led me downstairs.

The basement was not a cell.

It was an archive.

Boxes of contracts lined the walls. Old hard drives filled shelves. On a steel table sat a thick black ledger.

Lily had been right.

"You kept everything," I said.

"Records are power."

"Records are evidence."

He smiled. "Only if the right people see them."

He opened the ledger.

Payments to judges, inspectors, doctors, police, and fake subcontractors filled the pages.

My father's empire had been built on purchased silence.

Then I saw a familiar name.

CLARA BENNETT - EDUCATION FUND.

My wife had received money.

I stared at the entry.

My father watched me carefully.

"There. That's the truth she won't tell you."

"What was it for?"

"Loyalty."

The room seemed to contract.

Owen leaned against the stairs. "She took the money, Will."

My father slid a folder toward me.

Inside were tuition payments made to Clara's college after Lily disappeared.

For one ugly moment, doubt flooded in.

Then I noticed the dates.

The first payment had been made before Lily vanished.

Clara had already been on a scholarship from the Carter Foundation.

My father was lying by arranging true facts into a false story.

Just like he had done with my memory.

"You threatened to take it away," I said.

His smile faded.

"She still stayed quiet."

"Because you threatened her mother too."

Owen shifted.

My father turned on him. "Did Mercer talk?"

Owen didn't answer fast enough.

That was interesting.

Then a car door slammed outside.

My father checked the basement camera.

Clara stood on the porch.

Alone.

She held the wooden box.

My father laughed softly.

"And there she is. The one person in this family who always knew when to surrender."
