Chapter 17 - The Video

Mercer looked smaller without a white coat.
He sat behind glass at the county detention center and asked for immunity.
Lena laughed in his face.
He settled for the possibility of consideration.
Then he gave us a storage password.
The recovered video was grainy and eighteen years old.
Lily ran into frame clutching papers. Clara followed. Then I appeared from the rain.
Owen grabbed Lily.
I rushed him.
But before Owen struck me, my father stepped into frame.
"Put him down," Harold said.
Owen hesitated.
"He's your son."
"Then he'll forgive me."
Owen hit me with a flashlight.
I collapsed.
On the video, Clara screamed and tried to reach me. My father grabbed her by the wrist.
Then my mother appeared.
Helen Carter.
She had witnessed everything.
She slapped Harold and shouted, "I am taking both of my children tonight."
The tape ended.
I stared at the black screen.
Lily whispered, "Mom knew from the beginning."
Mae Ramos nodded. "That's why she spent three years building a case. She couldn't get Lily's location. Harold moved her every time Helen got close."
The next clip showed something even stranger.
A week later, my mother met Clara outside a grocery store.
Helen gave her the wooden box.
"Stay close to William," Mom said. "One day he'll remember. When he does, give him this."
Clara covered her face.
"I failed her."
I thought about twelve years of secret searching. About fear. About silence. About the bread Eva had pushed through a drain because adults had made truth too dangerous to carry openly.
"You failed in some ways," I said. "You didn't in others."
Clara looked at me.
It wasn't forgiveness.
Not yet.
But it was honest.
Lena entered the room with fresh paperwork.
"Harold's attorneys just filed an emergency motion claiming the evidence was fabricated by Lily and Clara."
Mae snorted. "Of course they did."
Lena set down another sheet.
"And Harold requested one witness at the hearing."
"Who?"
May you like
She looked at me.
"Eva."
