Chapter 20 - Above the Floor
Lily opened our mother's note at the kitchen table.
Not beneath it.
Not behind a locked door.
At the table.
Eva sat beside her with a plate of toast and watched as Lily unfolded the paper with shaking hands.
My mother's message was short.
Sweet girl, if you are reading this, then somebody finally chose truth over fear. I am sorry it took so long. None of this was your shame to carry. Come home hungry. There will always be a place for you at my table.
Lily pressed the note to her mouth.
Eva pushed the toast closer.
"Grandma said hungry."
Lily laughed through her tears.
"She did."
The hidden chamber was filled with concrete a week later. Before it was sealed, I went down once more.
That space had been built to keep people silent.
I left the door open behind me.
Harold pleaded not guilty. Owen agreed to testify. Mercer did too after prosecutors showed him the video.
No verdict could return my mother's life or Lily's stolen years. Justice could not rewind time. It could only stop the lie from moving forward.
Clara and I remained together, but not because everything was forgiven. We rebuilt because she stopped hiding the ugly parts and I stopped confusing certainty with truth.
Some nights I still woke remembering rain and a flashlight coming down toward my head.
On those nights, I checked Eva's room, then Lily's guest room across the hall.
Yes, guest room.
She refused to live alone for a while, and nobody asked her to.
One Saturday morning, I came into the kitchen and found Eva teaching Lily how to make pancakes shaped like stars.
Flour covered the counter.
Clara burned the first batch.
Lily laughed so loudly the sound carried through the whole house.
I stood in the doorway and listened.
Eighteen years earlier, my family had survived by whispering, hiding, and pretending not to hear.
Now every door was unlocked.
May you like
Every chair at the table was filled.
And for the first time in eighteen years, every voice in our home came from above the floor.
