Chapter 16 - The Signature

Clara looked like she had been struck.

"I did not witness that."

Lena kept her voice neutral. "The date is eighteen years ago."

Clara read the page.

Then she pointed to the notary stamp.

"This office was in your father's building. I signed blank scholarship forms there all the time."

My stomach tightened.

"Blank forms?"

"Harold's foundation required annual renewals. They'd put tabs where students were supposed to sign. I was nineteen. I signed what they gave me."

Lena compared samples.

The witness signature was genuine.

The document around it had been created later.

My father had taken Clara's real signature and built a lie around it.

Again.

That night, Clara and I sat alone outside the hotel while Lily slept.

"I don't know what happens to us," I said.

She nodded. "Neither do I."

"You kept too much from me."

"Yes."

"You knew she might be alive."

"Yes."

"You put her under our house."

Clara shut her eyes.

"I found her nine days ago near the old Ashcroft service road. Owen was following us. I panicked. The hidden room was the only place I knew Harold's people wouldn't search first because they thought it was still their surveillance cache."

"Why didn't you call me?"

"Because Lily was terrified of you remembering too fast. Mercer had told her head trauma could trigger seizures. She begged me for forty-eight hours. Then Owen started watching the house and I kept delaying."

"And the food? Eva said you wouldn't feed her."

Clara's face crumpled.

"I stopped opening the panel after I saw Owen outside. I slid water through the pipe, but I was scared he'd see. Eva heard Lily and started sneaking bread. I was wrong. I was terrified and wrong."

For once, there was no excuse after the explanation.

My phone rang.

Lena.

"Mercer is asking for a deal," she said. "He says Harold has one last file nobody found."

"What file?"

"A video from the night Lily disappeared."

I stood.

May you like

Lena's next words chilled me.

"He says it shows who actually ordered Owen to hit you."
