Chapter 18 - The Hearing

The judge denied Harold's request to question Eva in open court.
That did not stop his lawyers from trying to turn a seven-year-old girl's kindness into evidence of manipulation.
They argued Clara coached Eva to invent the hand beneath the drain.
Then Lena played the police body-camera footage from our kitchen.
The hidden chamber.
Lily's injuries.
The muddy footprints.
Owen's knife.
The room changed.
Then came the cassette and the old video. My father watched himself order Owen to strike me.
For the first time, he stopped smiling.
The judge froze the remaining Carter Development assets and recognized Lily's challenge to the old incompetency order.
It was not a final victory. But it was the first official document in eighteen years to call her Lily Carter.
Outside the courthouse, reporters crowded the steps.
Lily froze.
I offered my arm.
She took it.
"Do I have to say anything?"
"No."
"Good."
Clara walked a few steps behind us.
She had voluntarily given prosecutors every file she possessed, including messages that made her look bad.
At the car, Mae handed me an evidence copy of my mother's final letter.
The last paragraph had been hidden beneath a folded seam.
William, if you ever learn the truth, do not waste your life becoming your father in reverse. Hatred can control you as completely as fear.
I read it twice.
Then my phone rang.
Eva.
"Daddy, Aunt Lily is really coming home, right?"
I looked at my sister.
"Yes."
"Can she eat at the table now?"
Lily started crying.
So did I.
Before I could answer, Lena approached quickly.
"Harold was being transferred back to county lockup. The transport van was hit two blocks away."
My blood turned cold.
"He escaped?"
Lena shook her head.
"No. Someone tried to kill him."
May you like
She looked toward the courthouse doors.
"Owen Price is missing from protective custody."
