Chapter 14 - What Happened to Mom

For a moment I heard only Owen's confession.

It was me.

I crossed the room before anyone could stop me.

My fist hit Owen once.

Lena grabbed me from behind.

"William! Don't throw your life away for his confession."

I wanted to hit him again, but backed away.

Owen coughed. "Harold ordered it. Helen was taking evidence to Ramos. I loosened the line at the diner. I thought she'd notice before the highway."

"You thought?"

He looked ashamed, which somehow made me angrier.

Harold said, "He's lying to save himself."

Lily turned toward our father.

"Mom died because she tried to save me."

"Your mother died because she could never understand scale," Harold snapped. "Families like ours survive because someone makes decisions others are too weak to make."

Lily slapped him.

Not hard.

Just once.

"You don't get to call murder a decision."

The troopers cuffed Harold.

He looked small.

At the station, Owen gave a formal statement in exchange for nothing more than the prosecutor's promise to record his cooperation.

Mercer was arrested that evening at a private airfield.

Cal Brooks turned himself in two hours later.

Then Lena showed us something recovered from Owen's SUV.

A folder labeled EVA CARTER.

Inside were photographs, school schedules, and a draft emergency guardianship petition.

The proposed guardian was not Harold.

It was Clara.

I stared at my wife's name.

She went white.

"I never signed that."

Lena turned the page.

At the bottom was a signature that looked exactly like hers.
