Chapter 6 - Box 317

By sunrise I had stopped pretending this could be handled inside the family.

I copied the threat to two accounts, called an independent lawyer, and took Lily and Clara to First National.

Eva stayed with Clara's sister under police watch.

At the bank, the manager examined the old key and my identification.

"Box 317 belonged to Helen Carter," she said. "There is a successor instruction."

"Who?"

She looked at me.

"You and Lily Carter. Jointly."

My sister made a sound like she'd forgotten how to breathe.

Inside the vault, the box contained no money.

It held letters, a small ledger, a disposable camera, and a sealed envelope addressed to me.

William, if you are reading this, I failed to get Lily home.

My knees nearly gave out.

My mother's handwriting continued.

Harold paid Dr. Mercer to create a diagnosis. Owen moved Lily. Clara was frightened, but she tried to warn me after she realized what they had done. I told her to stay close to you because I feared Harold would isolate you completely.

I looked at Clara.

She was crying silently.

The next paragraph was worse.

Peter Wynn did not die in an accident. He discovered Harold was using Carter Development projects to move cash through fake subcontractors. Lily found Peter's copy of the accounts.

The ledger in the box listed transfers to Ashcroft, Owen Price, Dr. Mercer, and a company called Graystone Custodial Services.

One payment continued long after my father's supposed death.

Last month.

"Somebody is still funding them," I said.

Lily picked up the disposable camera.

The manager let us scan the old negatives.

One image showed my mother beside a diner with a woman whose name was written on the back:

Detective Mae Ramos.

I remembered Mae from Lily's missing-person case.

Clara searched her name. She was alive, retired, and forty miles away.

Then the bank manager returned with a second envelope.

"This was added to the box four months after your mother's death."

No sender.

Inside was a single photograph.

My father's car sat behind my mother's wrecked sedan.

And Owen Price was standing beside it.
