Chapter 1 - THE WRIST IN MID-AIR

The slap never landed.
Emma Carter caught Victoria Langford's wrist three inches from Isabella Moretti's face, and the entire ballroom went silent.
Crystal glasses stopped halfway to mouths. A violinist missed a note. Even the security guards seemed unsure whether they had permission to move.
Victoria stared at Emma's hand around her diamond-covered wrist.
"Take your hands off me."
Emma's pulse hammered. She was twenty-four, behind on rent, and working double shifts because her father's hospital bills had turned every paycheck into a math problem.
She knew exactly who Victoria was.
She also knew the woman in the wheelchair was trembling.
"I won't let you hit her," Emma said.
A gasp moved through the room.
Victoria leaned closer. "You're a waitress. Do you understand what happens to people like you when they forget their place?"
Emma almost let go.
Then Isabella's fingers closed weakly around the edge of the table.
Emma tightened her grip.
"If protecting her costs me my job, then it costs me my job."
Victoria's face hardened.
"You'll regret that."
A man's voice cut across the ballroom.
"Release Miss Carter."
Emma turned.
Vincent Moretti walked out from beside a marble pillar, and every guard in the room stepped aside.
Victoria's color vanished.
Emma released her wrist.
Vincent passed Victoria without looking at her. He knelt beside the elderly woman and touched her hand.
"Mother."
Emma's stomach dropped.
The frightened woman she had just defended was Isabella Moretti, mother of the most powerful billionaire in the room.
Victoria immediately started talking.
"Vincent, this waitress assaulted me. Your mother became confused, and I was trying to calm her down."
Vincent looked at Isabella.
"Is that what happened?"
Isabella's voice was quiet.
"No."
One word changed the room.
Vincent rose.
"Emma Carter, correct?"
Emma nodded.
"Yes, sir."
"I'll remember it."
Then Isabella tugged weakly at Emma's sleeve.
Emma leaned down.
The older woman's whisper was barely audible.
"Don't let Victoria get the blue envelope."
Emma straightened.
May you like
Across the table, Victoria had heard it too.
And for the first time that night, she looked afraid.
