Chapter 17 - LINDA'S STATEMENT

Linda Carter had written the statement nineteen years earlier.

Emma read it in a police interview room while her father sat beside her.

Her mother's words were precise.

She described altered medication charts, forged competency notes, and repeated attempts to make Isabella appear confused during board meetings.

She named Dominic as the family member who benefited.

But she named Richard Keene as the organizer.

At the end, Linda wrote one sentence that made Daniel cover his face.

If I die before this becomes public, please tell Emma I tried to leave her a world where powerful people still had to answer for what they did.

Emma stopped reading.

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Daniel whispered, "I should have told you."

Emma took his hand.

"You were trying to protect me."

"So was she."

The evidence changed everything.

Keene was charged with conspiracy, kidnapping, fraud, bribery, and evidence tampering. Dominic agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration on the nonviolent financial counts, though his role in intimidation remained under investigation.

Victoria faced charges for fraud, coercion, and conspiracy.

She did not ask Emma for forgiveness.

Emma respected that more than a fake apology.

Then Carl was found at O'Hare with a one-way ticket to Lisbon.

He was arrested before boarding.

The final loose end seemed tied.

Until Marco entered the room with a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was the original blue envelope.

"We found another page stuck inside the lining," he said.

Vincent unfolded it.

It was a letter from Isabella to Linda.

Dated three weeks before Linda died.

Vincent read the first line and went pale.

Emma stood.

"What?"

He handed it to her.

Linda, I need to tell Emma the truth about why the Moretti family paid for her birth.
