Chapter 18 - WHAT ISABELLA OWED

Emma read the line twice.
Then a third time.
"Paid for my birth?"
Isabella asked to speak with her privately.
They met in a quiet room overlooking Lake Michigan.
"Your mother nearly died having you," Isabella said. "The hospital required a specialist your parents couldn't afford. I paid for it."
Emma waited.
"That's the secret?"
"Part of it."
Isabella explained that Linda had wanted to quit weeks earlier. She stayed because Isabella was frightened and because Linda believed leaving would put another nurse in danger.
When Linda went into premature labor, Isabella paid every bill anonymously.
"She hated owing anyone," Isabella said. "Especially me."
Emma's throat tightened.
"So she came back to work."
"Too soon. Yes. And I let her."
Isabella looked down at her hands.
"I have regretted that for twenty-four years."
Emma finally understood the shame in the letter.
It wasn't a hidden bloodline or a secret inheritance.
It was guilt.
Human, ugly, complicated guilt.
"My mother made her own choices," Emma said. "You don't get to turn them into your crime just because you're rich enough to feel responsible for everything."
Isabella gave a small, surprised laugh.
"Linda would have said exactly that."
Vincent entered.
"The court dismissed the guardianship petition."
Isabella closed her eyes in relief.
Then Vincent looked at Emma.
"There's one more problem."
The Bellmore Hotel had released a statement accusing Emma of creating the gala confrontation for publicity.
Carl's replacement had doubled down.
Someone was still trying to destroy her reputation.
Emma took the phone and read the statement.
At the bottom was a media contact.
Halcyon Civic Partners.

The company was supposed to be frozen.
Yet someone had just used its name again.
