Chapter 14 - THE ARCHIVE

Emma ran through the sacristy with the brass key clenched in her fist.
Vincent stayed behind with Marco long enough to slow the attackers.
They escaped through an alley and regrouped two blocks away.
Miriam had been taken.
Keene was done pretending.
"We go to the police," Vincent said.
Emma shook her head. "By the time they get a warrant, the archive will be empty."
"You're suggesting we break in."
"I'm suggesting Miriam gave me a key for a reason."
Vincent stared at her.
"You really don't know how to quit."
"Neither did my mother."
That ended the debate.
At 2 a.m., they entered Keene's campaign building through a rear stairwell while Marco triggered a false network outage that emptied the basement IT room.
The brass key opened a steel door marked STORAGE.
Inside were filing cabinets, cash ledgers, duplicate seals, signed blank forms, and photographs.
Emma found a folder labeled CARTER.
Inside was a picture of Linda leaving Isabella's townhouse twenty years earlier.
Another showed Daniel at the Bellmore after his accident.
The last showed Emma herself, carrying a tray at a charity gala two years ago.
They had watched her for years.
Vincent opened a second folder.
MORETTI SUCCESSION.
It contained the forged trust papers, medical affidavits, and a handwritten list of "pressure points."
Beside Isabella's name: public confusion, medication, family embarrassment.
Beside Vincent's: scandal, board revolt, mother.
Beside Emma's: father, sister, debt.
Emma felt sick.
Then she found a document with tomorrow's date.
Emergency petition to place Isabella under court-supervised guardianship.
Attached was a witness statement from Victoria claiming Emma had assaulted Isabella at the gala.
"They're going to use me as proof," Emma said.
Vincent's phone buzzed.
A live video appeared.
Miriam was tied to a chair.

Richard Keene stood behind her.
"Bring back my archive," he said, "or she disappears before sunrise."
