Chapter 12 - FATHER AND DOCTOR

The Connecticut house looked empty.

Federal agents surrounded it quietly.

Henry arrived first, older than Daniel remembered.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

His father walked into the house carrying a silver case.

No Claire.

Agents listened through a device placed near an open basement window.

Marcus spoke first.

"You lost control."

Henry answered, "You got greedy."

"You kept Claire alive."

"She was useful."

Daniel clenched his jaw.

Marcus said, "She was evidence."

"Only if someone found her."

"Daniel found her."

"My son finally became inconvenient."

Only clarity.

Marcus demanded the hidden ledger page.

Henry refused.

Claire.

She was inside.

Marcus had brought her through the rear property before surveillance locked down.

Henry said, "Hello, sweetheart."

Claire answered, "Go to hell."

Marcus wanted Claire to authenticate a transfer.

A dormant Carter foundation account held nine hundred million dollars.

Created by Rebecca before her death.

Henry had hidden it.

The account was designed to fund whistleblower disclosures and employee claims if Henry's corruption was exposed.

Rebecca had planned a financial escape hatch.

Henry wanted it.

Marcus wanted it.

Claire controlled the encryption key.

"You kept her alive for money," Daniel whispered.

That explained the thirteen-month deception.

Claire's legal existence allowed them to pressure her for access while using her shares.

Inside, Henry lost patience.

A gunshot cracked.

Another shot.

Then fire.

Smoke poured from the basement windows.

Agents tackled him.

Henry did not emerge.

Neither did Claire.

Ortiz caught him near the porch.

"Basement fire!"

"My sister is in there!"

A window shattered.

Claire crawled onto the side lawn.

She coughed into his coat.

"Where's Dad?"

"He locked himself in the archive room."

A blast shook the building.

Flames punched through the roof.

"Don't mourn him yet."

"What?"

She coughed.

May you like

"There's a tunnel."

At the far tree line, an old man in a bloodstained shirt disappeared between the pines.
