Chapter 18 - THE FIRST LIE

Daniel and Claire entered Carter River One under surveillance.
Henry sat behind his old metal desk, tired but not defeated.
The room smelled of dust and river water.
"Both my children."
Claire said, "We're not here for a reunion."
"You always were rude."
"Why bring us here?"
"Because this is where everything started."
Henry told the story like he expected admiration.
A bridge contract.
A failed inspection.
A bribe to keep work moving.
No one died.
The project succeeded.
Henry learned a lesson.
Rules were expensive.
Results were profitable.
"That was the first lie," Daniel said.
"No. The first truth."
"You're still doing it."
"Doing what?"
"Turning cowardice into philosophy."
His face changed.
Good.
Henry's eyes hardened.
"Your mother wanted to burn down everything we built."
"So you killed her."
"Marcus made a medical decision."
"You paid him."
"To protect the family."
Every monster in his life used the same word.
Protect.
Behind Henry, the river moved through broken windows.
Detonator receiver.
He needed Henry distracted.
She asked, "Why keep me alive?"
Henry's attention shifted.
"Because you had your mother's stubbornness and her access key."
"No."
"You kept me alive because you couldn't stand killing another woman who saw through you."
His hand moved toward the detonator.
Daniel said, "Dad's first lie."
The jammer activated.
Henry pressed the trigger.
Nothing.
His face went blank.
Agents breached.
Claire ducked.
Daniel lunged.
The gun fired.
Pain tore through Daniel's shoulder.
Agents slammed Henry to the floor.
Claire crawled to Daniel.
"Stay with me."
"I wasn't planning to leave."
Henry shouted as they cuffed him.
"You think this fixes anything?"
"No."
May you like
She pressed her hand against Daniel's wound.
"It just stops you from breaking more."
