Chapter 19 - THE TRIALS

Henry Carter went to trial nine months later.

So did Marcus Hale.

The evidence was ugly and enormous.

Rebecca's diary.

Joanne Pike's testimony.

The Black Ledger.

Claire's captivity videos.

Elise's message logs.

Vanessa's records.

Financial transfers.

The fake deaths.

The fake lives.

Claire testified for six hours.

When the lawyer asked why she did not escape sooner, the courtroom went still.

She answered, "Because I was drugged, locked up, threatened, moved, and watched."

The lawyer tried again.

"Did you ever cooperate?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because surviving captivity is not consent."

Several jurors nodded.

Marcus blamed Henry.

Henry blamed Marcus.

Neither blamed themselves.

Both were convicted.

Henry: murder conspiracy, kidnapping, fraud, racketeering, obstruction.

Marcus was convicted too. Vanessa pleaded guilty; her cooperation mattered.

So did what she had done.

She received seven years.

Daniel did not visit.

Daniel did too.

"I didn't listen when you were scared."

"Are you listening now?"

"Yes."

"Even if you don't like it?"

"Especially then."

Carter Meridian paid hundreds of millions into restitution funds.

The stock fell forty percent.

The company survived.

Claire refused to return as CFO.

Instead she led the Carter Accountability Foundation.

Rebecca's nine hundred million funded worker claims, legal aid, medical reviews, and whistleblower protection.

One afternoon, Daniel visited Claire's office.

Her death certificate hung framed behind the desk.

"That's dark."

"It's useful."

"For what?"

"Reminding people paperwork can lie."

"There's one unresolved identity."

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"Who?"

The Claire deepfake contractor, Julian Price, had made twelve synthetic profiles.

Eleven matched known uses.

One did not.

A man's face.

Younger.

"What was it used for?"

"To create the dental records that proved Henry died in the plane crash."

Claire went still.

"So?"

"The body in Henry's coffin wasn't unidentified."

May you like

"Who was it?"

"Marcus Hale's brother."
