Chapter 17 - CLAIRE RETURNS TO THE BOARD

No one laughed.
Claire preferred it that way.
Remove Marcus Hale.
Remove directors Paul Renner, David Sloan, and Cynthia Vale for concealment and conflicted transactions.
Freeze disputed vendor payments.
Appoint an independent forensic committee.
Waive executive privilege over historic safety investigations.
One director protested.
"You'll destroy the company."
"No. We may discover the company doesn't deserve to survive in its current form."
He had spent years defending Carter Meridian as if family ownership made it moral.
It did not.
Then Vanessa was brought in under police guard.
She had agreed to testify.
Thirteen months of captivity sat between them.
Vanessa started, "I'm sorry."
Claire raised one hand.
"Don't."
"You don't get to make yourself feel clean in my boardroom."
"I know."
"Do you?"
"You helped erase me. You threatened children. You forged my life while I was locked in a room."
Claire did not comfort her.
Daniel did not either.
Her cooperation reduced charges.
It did not erase them.
She would still face prison.
Daniel filed for divorce.
At the end of the board meeting, Claire voted to place her shares into a transparent family trust with independent oversight.
No single Carter would ever again control the company alone.
"We found Henry."
Carter River One.
He had barricaded himself inside the old project office.
No hostages.
No obvious weapon.
"He wants us there."
"Yes."
"So we go with fifty federal agents."
"There's one problem."
"What?"
"Henry has connected the old demolition charges beneath the east foundation."
"That site hasn't had explosives in thirty years."
"Somebody maintained them."
Claire whispered, "Dad."
"If agents breach, he says he'll bring the whole structure down."
May you like
"What does he want?"
"Both of you."
