Chapter 9 - THE BLACK LEDGER

SWAT cleared the executive floor.
Henry escaped through a service stairwell.
Marcus was not there.
Claire was.
She was thinner.
Hair cut short.
Bruises at both wrists.
But alive.
For a moment neither spoke.
Then she whispered, "You got old."
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For believing you left."
"You were supposed to."
He pulled back.
"What?"
"Dad designed it that way."
So the false emails framed her as angry, unstable, and voluntarily gone.
They used details from old sibling fights.
Things only family knew.
"Vanessa gave them those."
Daniel's face hardened.
"She did worse than that."
"How much worse?"
"Enough."
Paramedics moved Claire toward the ambulance.
Before leaving, she pointed toward Henry's office.
"Get the ledger before Dad does."
Inside was a black notebook.
No digital system.
No encryption.
Handwritten payments.
And dates.
Twenty-seven years.
Henry's private record of corruption.
At the back was a page labeled SUCCESSION.
Names included Daniel, Claire, Vanessa, Marcus, and three board members.
Next to Daniel:
Useful because he believes rules matter.
Next to Claire:
Dangerous because she reads everything.
Next to Vanessa:
Useful until emotionally attached.
Vanessa had been recruited.
Then became a liability when she began caring about the children.
That did not erase what she had done to them.
But it explained Henry's threat.
Ortiz photographed every page.
Then Daniel reached the last sheet.
One sentence.
IF H.C. IS EXPOSED, CONTROL PASSES TO M.H.
Marcus Hale.
"Marcus wasn't just helping my father."
"He was the successor."
Then Ortiz's radio exploded with voices.
The ambulance carrying Claire had been hit at the intersection.
A black pickup blocked the road.
Two armed men dragged open the rear doors.

By the time he reached the gate, the ambulance was empty.
Claire had been taken again.
