Chapter 15 - THE YACHT

Henry's yacht left Stamford before federal boats arrived.
Coast Guard tracked it east.
Noah appeared on a video call, frightened but unharmed.
"Hello, son."
Daniel's voice went flat.
"Let him go."
"Transfer the foundation."
"It's not ours."
"Everything is ours if we can control it."
"No."
"Claire."
"You tortured me for thirteen months and still didn't learn that word."
"Noah cried.
"Aunt Claire."
Then hardened.
"Authorize."
Daniel asked, "How?"
Henry showed a portable sensor.
He needed Daniel live on video performing a pulse-validation phrase while wearing a matched temporary ring delivered earlier by courier.
Mara examined it.
"If you cooperate, he can create a short authentication bridge."
Claire whispered, "Don't."
"That's my son."
"And nine hundred million dollars belongs to thousands of people your father hurt."
Henry built the choice to destroy them.
Child or truth.
Family or accountability.
"I'll do it."
"Daniel."
"On one condition. Noah gets on a Coast Guard tender first."
"You don't set conditions."
"Then you don't get the pulse."
The standoff lasted eleven minutes.
Finally Henry agreed to move Noah to a small launch.
The transfer began.
Coast Guard approached.
Noah climbed down.
Then gunfire erupted from the yacht.
Not Henry's men.
Marcus's network.
A second boat attacked.
Someone wanted Henry dead before he could testify.
Coast Guard returned fire.
The launch carrying Noah spun sideways.
Daniel shouted.
"Noah!"
The feed vanished.
For twenty seconds there was only static.
Then a camera came back.
Noah was in a Coast Guard officer's arms.
Safe.
Daniel nearly collapsed.
On the yacht, Henry ran below deck.
The attacking boat withdrew.
Agents boarded.
Open safes.
Burning papers.
No Henry.
A rear emergency craft was missing.
Again.
Claire said, "He can't disappear forever."
A Coast Guard officer handed Daniel a waterproof pouch recovered from the deck.
Inside was an old photograph of Rebecca.
On the back, Henry had written:
SHE CHOSE THE COMPANY OVER ME TOO.
"No."
"What?"
May you like
"Mom didn't die because she found the corruption."
"She was trying to leave him."
