Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO LOOKED LIKE DANIEL

The school camera showed Daniel Carter walking through the front office.

Same height.

Same dark coat.

Same face.

Almost.

"Deepfake glasses."

A thin projection layer distorted the man's features on camera.

He carried Daniel's stolen corporate token.

He had forged Daniel's pickup code.

Julian Price, the missing digital contractor, was not missing anymore.

He had taken Noah.

Police traced the vehicle to an underground garage.

Empty.

"Think."

"That's my son."

"I know."

"Then don't tell me to think."

"I'm telling you because Dad wants you stupid."

Henry always won by making other people react.

Daniel forced himself to breathe.

Noah wore a kid's location band.

The signal was disabled.

But the band stored nearby Wi-Fi names.

When it reconnected, Mara captured one identifier.

HARBOR-17-GUEST.

Carter Meridian owned a Pier 17 warehouse used for archival shipping.

"Everything goes back to old properties."

He hid inside things he believed he owned.

At Pier 17, they found Julian Price tied to a chair.

Beaten.

Alive.

No Noah.

"Where is my son?"

"I don't know."

Julian panicked.

"I swear."

"Why did you help Vanessa make Claire's videos?"

"They paid me."

"That answer is getting old."

A yacht.

Registered through a Panamanian shell.

Docked in Stamford.

Henry planned to leave the country.

Noah was leverage.

"Why take him instead of me?"

"Because Henry thinks Claire will give up the foundation key for Noah."

Claire went still.

"Would you?"

She did not answer.

That was enough.

Then Julian added one thing.

"The yacht isn't just an escape route."

"What is it?"

"A broadcast station."

Henry had prepared files implicating Daniel in the corruption network.

Forged emails.

Biometric transfers.

Audio models.

If the foundation money did not move, Henry would release evidence framing Daniel as the architect of twenty years of bribery.

"Twenty years? I was in college."

May you like

"The files don't need to survive court."

"They only need to survive the first headline."
