Chapter 1 - THE PLATE HIT THE STONE

The plate hit the patio before Daniel understood what he was seeing.
Blackberry cobbler, whipped cream, and broken ceramic exploded across eight-year-old Owen's shirt and sneakers. The boy stumbled backward, lost his balance, and landed hard on the stone beside the dessert table.
Evelyn Mercer stood over him with one hand still raised from the kick that had sent the plate flying.
"Garbage cooks garbage," she said.
The backyard went quiet.
Daniel's work bag slipped from his hand and struck the patio.
"Owen."
His son looked up. Tears were running down his face, but that was not what scared Daniel.
Owen was pale.
Too pale.
Daniel crossed the patio in three strides and lifted him into his arms.
"Dad," Owen whispered.
"I'm here. Are you hurt?"
Owen clutched his stomach and pointed with a shaking finger toward a half-empty glass on the drink table.
"Grandma made me drink that tea. She said I couldn't leave until I finished it."
Daniel looked at the glass.
Evelyn folded her arms.
"It's just tea. Stop teaching him to be dramatic."
Sarah, Daniel's wife, stood near the sliding door with both hands over her mouth.
Owen curled tighter against Daniel.
"It tasted wrong," he whispered. "And Grandma told me not to tell Mom."
Daniel's eyes moved back to Evelyn.
For the first time, the confidence on her face flickered.
Only for a second.
Then she smiled.
"Take him to a hospital if you're so worried," she said. "You can't prove a thing."
Sarah slowly raised her eyes toward the small pantry camera mounted under the roofline.
Daniel followed her gaze.
May you like
The camera pointed directly at the drink table.
And Evelyn saw them looking at it.
